THE STARS AND CARS OF YESTERYEAR

On August 14th Senior Tour made it second appearance at the Claremont Speedway in Claremont, NH for the 2015 season.   STAR filled the pits with cars from all over New England to give Claremont Speedway a night of real “ole school racing”.

STAR started their day with warm ups and the evening would bring the tour 2 heats and 2 features.

But let’s get back to our pit area for some “Pit Chatter”.  As usually the members were having their fun in the pits and sometimes I think there is more going on in the pits than on the track!  It was “Birthday Night “ for two members, Scott Poirier from the #73 Mod and Bobby Turner from the #7 Mod.  STAR celebrated their birthdays in the pits and now if you know the STAR members “The Games Began”!  It was nice to see the owners and members from Claremont join in on the fun!  Cake was passed out to everyone and cake was smashed in faces and do I need to say anymore!   But isn’t that what it is all about having FUN?   Believe me these guys know how to have a good time!

Now it was time to get serious and get them out for their heat races.  First the Sportsmen hit the track for their heat race.  It was Bob Seward from Ma in his #69B coupe to take the first win and checkered for the tour that evening.  The Modifieds were lined up and ready to hit the asphalt.  Bob Donahue from NH in his #99 was not about to give this win up.  Donahue held his line and took the second checkered for the evening for the Modified heat win.

Back to the pits, and again there must have been a full moon that night!  Oh my gosh they were having a heck of a time in the pits area.  Laugher and jokes going up and down the complete pit area; it was nice to see that racing still can be FUN!

Then it was feature time!  Oh yes STAR gave the crowd just what they have been waiting for, “REAL OLE FASHION RACING” from the beginning to the end.  Race Director Mary Lima turned the group over to George Powers who would walk the fans back into time and show them how real racing was started….In the middle of the track!  George stood in the middle of the track for feature races, bringing them down, crossing them over and waving the green flag all from the middle of the track.  What a head rush!  George has been doing this with STAR for over 16 years and it is always a hit!

The Sportsmen were off and it was hometown guy Rocky Cusanelli Sr to show the Sportsmen how it was done by dominating the field and taking down the win for the Sportsmen that evening.   Robert Harless from NY was the only car close to Rocky and took down a second.  Skip Stearns from NH in the #7X coupe topped off the field with a third.  The top three were brought to trackside for an out of car interview and awarded with trophies.

The Modifieds were in place and ready to hit the track for their feature race.  Once more George Powers stood in the middle and flagged on the modifieds.  The Green Came Down and it was off to racing!  The pack was tight switching positions lap from lap but when the checkered came down in was on new member Thomas Trempe from NH in his #77 Mustang by inches from second place Scott Poirier from Ct in his #73 Pinto.  Brian Robie from NH in his #7 Pinto finished off the pack with a third.  The top three were brought trackside for an out of car interview and awarded with trophies.

STAR would like to thank Claremont Speedway their entire staff and to George Powers for making a night we will all remember!
