THE STARS AND CARS OF YESTERYEAR

STAR gave Waterford Speedbowl a 21 car salute on July 23rd as Waterford Speedbowl held its annual “Nostalgia Night”. Cars from all over New England flooded the Bowl to celebrate. The weather was unbelievably hot and steamy but this did not keep the members of STAR away.  The evening would bring the tour 2 features, one for the Sportsmen and one for the Modifieds.

STAR started their day with warm ups for each division and then flooded the midway of the bowl to stage their vintage cars for the fans to get an close up feel of the cars, drivers and past “Champions” of the bowl before their feature races.  It was so great to see so many fans and past drivers of the Speedbowl stop by and say “hello” and talk to the members about their cars. There was a lot of history on the midway that night, Greco #43, Bunnell #318. Farone #14, Potter #110, Corky Cookman #04, Bunnell #73 was just a few that displayed for STAR. This has always been a huge hit and I was so glad to see that the New London Waterford Speedbowl continues the tradition.

Then at feature time the Tour split up as some STAR cars rolled out of the midway and onto the track and some staying on the midway for the fans, giving them a touch of up close and in action!

First up was the Sportsmen division where hometown boy Jim Torok from Ct in his #04 Pinto of Corky Cookman took down the first checkered for the evening.  Robert Harless from NY in his #8 sedan pulled off a second and Art Merchant from Ma in his #64 coupe closed off with a third place. Top three were brought trackside for an out of car interview and awarded with trophies.

The Modifieds were lined up and ready to hit the asphalt.  Who would take the Victory!  It was anyone’s win that night!  It would be Scott Poirier from Ct in his Donnie Bunnell #73 Pinto to take the second checkered for the evening and the feature win for the modifieds.  Gregg Massini from Ma in the #19 Vega took a very close second and to top the pack off with a third was James Allen from Ma in his #44 Mustang.  Top three were brought trackside for an out of car interview and awarded with trophies.

STAR would like to thank The New London Waterford Speedbowl and their entire staff for all their hospitality and a night to remember!
